- Just make a face like this whenever you get a good hand. You'll win every time. Best poker face ever: http://www.vintagephotos.com/Image%20507%20Funny%20face%20Man.jpg
- The earlier you act, the better hand you need. As a beginner, concentrate on playing basic poker. Don't try to get fancy because you won't understand how or when to do the moves. AA, KK, and AK are the 3 best hands. QQ is next. AJ, AT, big suited connectors (consecutive cards of the same suit, like KhQh), JJ, and 10-10 are next. Smaller pairs, aces with smaller kickers, and small suited connectors are next. In early position, including the blinds, only play AA, KK, QQ, and AK. If you're in late position, and the pot isn't raised before it gets to you, you can play most of the other hands listed. Position is important because you know what the other people are doing. If you're early, you have no idea what they have. If you act late, you have an idea of what they might have. If they raise, the odds are they have a decent hand and you can fold something like Q-10. Pay attention to your kicker. Having A-6 is meaningless since there is a decent chance of someone else having an ace with a bigger kicker. AQ beats A6 unless you have 2 pairs and they don't. Look at the board and see what other people might have. Are there 3 cards that can make a straight or a flush? Is there a pair on the board that can give someone trips or a full house? If so, proceed with caution. Standard pre-flop raise is 3-4 times the BB. If it is raised in front of you and you have a good hand, raise to the size of the pot. After the flop, 3/4of the pot-the pot size are pretty standard bets. Don't bother with the min. raise. Play more mathematically in limit than no-limit, and don't try to bluff, since people are more likely to call the smaller bets than in no limit where you can throw out a big bet. Practice these concepts in the play money games. The people who play those games, for the most part, are either clueless or just screwing around, so not everything I told you will work in those games. They're still good things to practice, since they work in real money games and live games. When you get better at playing, and understand odds, etc. move to real money on-line games and live cash games. Go to a good poker forum, like www.homepokertourney.com and post any questions you might have.
