Why does the average joe play poker?
Pros, most of the people I play live games with and most of the people who answer poker questions on here play poker for monetary gain and/or a sense of accomplishment and/or competition. They take it seriously. However, it would be a very difficult way to make money if the other 90% of the players, the fish/guppies/donkies/whatever you want to call them didnt play. I think we can all assume that MOST people who play poker do not do so in order to win the world series some day or to become millionaires. So, why does the average joe play poker? When an average tourist sits down at a poker table in vegas, why is he there? When the average joe with the average day job comes home from work and says "ok, time to unwind and play some poker.", what is his motivation? Is it pure recreation? Do they hope to get "lucky" and win some money? Do they actually believe they know the game and can win? Does the average joe understand concepts like pot odds or hand strength or position?

- A battle of the wits! I can't kick your azz, but perchance I can out wit you. Fat dudes, short dudes, all sorts of dudes are basically equal. And it wouldn't be the same if you don't play for money. If you lose a card game you can say you didn't care, you weren't paying attention. If you win or lose a 100$ pot, you care no matter what you say, even if you are Bill Gates.
- I think the average guy plays for the interest and the love of the game or gamble.. Sometimes "regular" guys end up doing well in those big money tournaments, I've seen it in the past on WPT. An older gentleman was just on a RV vacation to Vegas, decided to play some cards, and ended up at the final table.
- Keep in mind that the average poker player thinks they are far better than they actually are. So they may be playing for the goal of monetary gain, but just aren't good enough to achieve it.
- Fun! Doyle Brunson said it clear: " People finally realize that poker is the best game there is" Poker is entertaining, fun, you meet people, you gamble, and you might win a little bit of money. For the average joe, what else do they need? It might not even involved money for some people, it's pure recreation. It's like going to play golf, or any sport by the way. We have fun, it's entertaining, we can meet people, we don't have to do it for several hours each day. No need to be Tiger Woods.

- pokercoach said everything you need to know, the fun in the game, experiences with new people, the possibility of winning, and the fact that "anyone can win" really are the major draws to the general public

- 5-10 years ago, poker wasnt so popular. Before that there never been much more than 600 entrants at the WSOP Main Event. Do you know how many entrants in 76-77 when Doyle Brunson won his Main Event bracelets ? 22 and 34 entrants respectively. Barely enough to make 3-4 tables. In 2006 there was 8773 entrants... notice the gap ? Since 2003 when Moneymaker won the main event (839 entrants) , people thought "why not me" and the next year there was more than 2576 players at the main event. All those new players, they werent good players hiding in the underground games. They were for most of them brand new players to the game who could afford the buy-in and who barely knew what was the best between 2 pairs and three of a kind. They were just trying to live the "Moneymaker" Dream. Since then, tons of new players emerged, playing regularly, trying or pretending to be good. Of course they are fishes... it take many years and efforts to master this game... or have exceptional skills. The players who started to play before that generation of player who did their homeworks are usually superior to the new players who joined poker because it was the new trend.
