  1. Player B is the winner, his hand is A,J,10,9,5. Player A has A,J,10,8,5. This is assuming, of course, that there are no flushes. The only time players split a pot is when they both have hands of equal value. These two players have no pair, so the value of their hands are determined by their high cards. They both share the A,J, and 10 from the board but then Player B's 9 outkicks player A's 8. The fives that they both have are irrelevant at this point.
  2. Player B wins the hand. Both players have only an Ace high (no pair or better). Player B has a 9 and player A only has an 8. Player B= Ace-Jack-10-9-5 Player A= Ace-Jack-10-8-5 See?? Player B has higher cards than player A. This is not a split pot because one player has a better hand than the other. It would be a split pot if the board was 6-7-8-9-2 (no flush possiblity) and player 1 had 10-2 and player 2 had K-10. Bother players have a 10 high straigh (6-7-8-9-10). It doesn't matter that player 1 has a pair, and it doesn't matter that player 2 has a King. What matters is the best 5 card hand, and in this case, the best 5 card hand is the 10 high straight, which both players have. So the pot is split. To do this, count all the money in the pot and divide it by the number or players splitting (in this case it's only 2, but if there was a 3rd player in the hand that also had a 10 it would be split 3 ways). Once the pot is divided each winning player gets their share.
