Is there a specific poker tournament strategy that should be employed when playing in the big leagues?

  1. Pro poker players have their own poker tournament strategy. It's a matter of developing one that works for you. Of course, you still need to know how to get started. Here's a good resource: http://www.sure2profit.com/poker.
  2. tight solid. Take a survivalist approach. Making sure you get your share of blinds and position steals (small ball as much as you can). Unless you've got a very weak table, then try to take control. I find more and more you'll find alot of maniacs at the beginning of tournaments. If your lucky and get some cards against them its great but otherwise you want to minimise the number of heads up all ins you need to face at the early stages.
  3. sure.....if the Cincinnati Reds call you up don't bet on baseball...better yet don't gamble and endow a foundation of some sort
  4. Be aggressive, learn how position affects the hands you can play, and learn pot-odds. Read some books, like Super System 2, Harrington on Hold'em, and some other ones. Play on-line a lot. Most sites offer free play chip tournaments as well as free roll tourney where you can win real money. Pokerstars.com has tournaments with buy-ins anywhere from 10 cents to $1000+. Also find a weekly charity game you can play in for $25 or $35. If all you play is on-line, you'll get eaten alive in live games.
  5. Be a pro. If you aren't a pro, then you are a fish for the pros to feed off of. Don't put yourself in that position if you don't belong there.
  6. The simple fact that you ask this question on Yahoo Q/A is enough for me to know that you dont belong to those leagues, am I right ? If you PLAN to move to the big leagues and wonder how it going to be, here is what I can tell you. During the first or maybe two first levels of the tourney, regulars pro going to evaluate you. A priori they will be tempted to think you are just another fish who try the high stakes... and most likely they will be right. If you show any weakness, unwillingness to call large bet or make bad plays, they will constantly push you around. First of all, new players who make the jump into the high stakes tend to play more conservatively than necessary, they are intimidated and maybe the cash they spent into the buy-in are of somekind of value and they would like to preserve it. For that reason, if you show some willingness to contest pots that naturally belong to you, you will earn some respect. Even if you lose the pot it doesnt matter, as long they see you are not weak. Name players get so much respect that they can more easily steal pots from pseudo-pro players. So, in overall, high stakes tourney are just like the low stakes with the difference that the players are much more stronger. In low stakes its much more easier because you can capitalize from the mistakes of your opponents more often. In the high stakes, you cant do that as much. Earn respect, play your best game and follow a standard tourney strategy and you might.... well... maybe make money out of it !
  7. mix it up, play tight then maybe show a bluff! Always keep your opponent guessing! The above guy is a tool, you dont have to be a pro to beat a pro(Moneymaker and fossilman wereinternet players)! i have plaeyed in Vegas poker tourneys and its all in the cards, the best player dont always win!!! My advice is dont be scared and go with what you know, everyones tecnique is different!
