What is the deal with online poker sites these days? Is it illegal to play for money if from the U.S.?
Public Comments
- Of course it is; unregulated gambling has always been illegal.
- No most are from off shore accounts and totally legal, i play at Poker Stars and they are based in Costa Rica.
- The reason it is illegal now is because the off shore companies and how they run the poker sites. First off they dont always pay you when you win. Next you have to worry about the use of your CC. Do you really want to give somebody over seas your cc. If they do take it and use it the wrong way, how are you going to get it correct. Its not like you can sue them for wrongful use of the card. Best of luck to you and I do mean luck.
- It is not now, nor has it ever been illegal to play poker online for real money. The law that was recently passed makes it illegal for financial institutions to transfer money to the poker/gambling sites (but even that hasn't taken effect yet).
- The last thing I knew was that most sites had to purchase a license to continue. My friend played one for a while and it was shut down because of that but the one he plays now is legit.
