poker: Is THIS a semi-bluff?
Okay. Phil Ivey had Queen-Eight of Hearts and another guy had Five-Six: the flop comes: J-J-7 with TWO hearts. Phil Ivey raised Other guy re-raised Phil Ivey went all in. Is this a SEMI BLUFF? actually i said the flop wrong. there is only 1 heart*** thats kind of big.

- yes that is a semi bluff. Phil Ivey knows he is probably behind in the hand at the moment. He goes all in. If the guy has a Jack he is likely calling, and then Ivey knows he still has 35% chance to make a flush by the river if called. If the other guy has a 7, or a pocket pair, he is probably folding, so Ivey steals the pot. He probably figures the guy will fold 60 % of the time, and call with a Jack 40% of the time ... and he expects to win 35% of the time when called. So 60% of the time he wins what was in the pot, 13% of the time he is called and hits his flush, and he loses his whole stack 27% of the time .... so he thinks his expected value is good so this semi bluff is worth it
- In poker, any good player only makes "semi-bluffs." You should never bet when you have absolutely zilch, only bluff when you still have a chance of winning. So this guy was just normally bluffing: he didnt think he had the best hand but thought he could get the other guy to fold and if he didnt, still had a chance at winning. That is how bluffing works!
- nope, that bet is knowing he is winning at this point or at least a chance to double up at fifty/fifty aggressive but correct odds
