why are most professional poker players cocky A-holes?
I've been playing poker professionally for a little while now and there's one thing i've found out is that most often professional poker players are cocky, arrogant, and just a bunch of A-holes. Now the one thing I havn't been able to figure out is why. I've played against movie stars, professional athletes and the ones I've gone against don't have an attitude like the poker players I play against and the stars i've played against have 10 times more of a reason to be cocky. why are poker players so cocky?

- Because being a cokcy ahole either intimidates people and makes them fold when they shouldn't, or pisses people off and makes them call when they shouldn't, or even worse, raise. 90% of them do it for these reasons, the other 10% are just a holes.
- Because they think there better then everyone else but if they lose money in a game they start crying and reporting that there using bots and junk but if that fails there just show offs that cant fight back
- To distract and unsettle you, they're hoping you would mess up and give them the advantage, the best thing to do is ignore them and concentrate on the cards, something I do is when they start behaving like that I see them as the wrestlers you see on WWE etc but without the brawn, its rather entertaining when you know they're trying their best to put on a show for others by annoying you and all they've accomplished is your amusement ;)
- I have been playing poker for sometime too, not professionally like yourself but knowing the game and reading the players as I do the only explanation I can offer is: It can be an egotistical game, strong willed and strong personalities can force weaker players out of a hand and this tends to shine through in their personality. A good bluffer is often egotistical and as you will know a Good bluffer can make a lot of money at the right places in poker.
- They are just misunderstood !
- You called it, it's because they are class one A-holes for sure. I have been dealing for over 3 years and i find that i make more tips in a 3-6 games then in a higher limit game. My instructor who taught me how to deal is Glenn Dino, he has been a dealer for over 20 years and he works at the mirage, and before the Bellagio opened up, the mirage was the place to go for all the big pros. And he would tell storys how Johnny Chan had lost over 36,000 playing Chineese poker, and as he was giveing the next hand out, Chan threw the cards all over and told Glenn to deal them again. Another story was of pro J.J lue who made two final tables on the WPT. she used to play 75-150 stud at the mirage and she made Glenn walk all the way around the table to fold her hand, because she said that glenn needed to walk around to loss some weight (glenn is on the big side, but thats just mean). Also Gabe Caplan Who was once a big t.v star and has made a few final table, was on the WPT and in the end as you are getting your money you put down how much you are going to tip the dealers, Gabe diden't even leave one dime for the dealers. What a prick.
- all professional poker players, even if they seem like the nicest people in the world, have big egos...if you are good enough to make it playing professionally, you are going to know that you are really good at what you do...and a lot of times people show this side of themselves when they get unlucky because they know they got their opponent to put the money in with the worst hand, or they thought they would anyway, and they got unlucky or they were shown the nuts against the second nuts however, if you notice the top professionals, most of them are humbler, and that's what makes them TOP professionals...obviously there are some major exceptions, but the majority of top players are respectful enough of their opponents to know how to act at a table, and it will get them more action from bad players in the future, because they are nice people to be around and don't scare people away
