Juanda vs Laak high stakes poker pot odds?
Okay Juanda has Qh, Jh. Laak has Qc, 8c. Flop comes out Qs, 8h, 5h. Preflop the pot was 12,000. Laak raises another 20k making the pot 32,000. Juanda has 12 outs (flush draw and 3 jacks) which is around 25% to hit by the turn. However his pot odds are 20:32 or 38%. The only reason Laak bet so much was because he knew Juanda was on a draw or had a high queen. If a heart doesnt come out on the turn Laak is going to bet even more so i dont think Juanda can use the 48% method (both turn and river). However Juanda ends up calling and i dont know why.

- i think you are reading too much into the fact that you know each player's holecards in this spot, because the fact is that the players sitting down and playing don't know the cards...sure juanda was behind in this hand, but when laak overbets the pot like that there is no reason for him to believe that his top pair isn't the best hand, and even if he's beat he can redraw to his flush...and honestly, john made an amazing just-call in this spot, i guarantee you many players would have gone all-in on the flop and been an underdog for all their chips, but john managed to just call and then fold on the turn when he missed
- You've got to look at it from Juanda's POV. He's got top pair with a flush draw. He's probably thinking top pair might be good in that spot, but when he's raised he thinks top pair may not be good so he calls to see if he can hit his flush.
- If i remember right they were either 3 handed or head up at this point. In a short game flopping top pair is huge, and having a player like laak, who is know as an aggresive player makes it hard to fold the hand. And his odds were not that bad, going to the turn he can hit a heart or a jack to take the go in front. So he has 12 outs times 4, and that gives us 48% to hit his hand on the turn. So his play is justified, There is no way to know that phil has flopped 2 pair here, he played it well. Plus if i remember right the blinds were starting to get huge so you can't sit around all day waiting for the perfect hand.
