How to Play Poker Videos

Where is this quote from, and what do you think of it?

"God does not play dice with the universe: He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e. everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex variant of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time."

  1. Not sure (and looking up is cheating), but I believe Albert Einstein said this. It tells me that God knows all, is all powerful (made the rules), and will win. Best bet is to be on His side.
  2. Wasn't that first part Einstein. Although as I recall he later after controversy clarified that he was not using god in the sense that theists use it. It was a metaphor.
  3. it's a take-off on a quote by einstein but it is not by einstein himself. einstein said the part about god not playing dice with the universe. that was a critique of the copenhagen interpretation of quantum physics. the rest of it is NOT einstein, and, in my opinion, is a bit silly. i believe it is from this book: http://www.amazon.com/Good-Omens-Neil-Gaiman/dp/0441003257 good omens by gaiman and pratchett
  4. Einstein. And he really doesn't mean god the way most people that use the word do. What he is saying is that the laws of Physics have certain outcomes that make things bound to happen.
  5. Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens Commentary on: "I cannot believe that God would choose to play dice with the universe." -- Einstein
  6. 1. Albert Einstein 2. It is funny
  7. Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman said this. They are confused people. God has his ENTIRE plan laid out in plain view for all. You just have to pick up His Book. It's called the Bible. He has all "rules" listed, and his demands. And, God frowns upon gambling.
  8. Einstein. By God he meant Nature. An oft-(mis)quoted sentence used by fundies to claim that even such a pillar of science as Einstein was recanted and acknowledged an Intelligent Designer.
  9. Einstein. He means the laws of the universe are solid. There is no chance. Nature works in a set way. Anyone that knows anything about Einstein knows that his idea of god is nothing like theirs.
  10. Terry Pratchett, Good Omens And like any Pratchett, the book was fabulous.
  11. The dice thing is Einstein, but I don't believe the entire quote is his. Einstein, upon realizing that his theories allowed randomness to play a role in the universe, devoted his entire later life attempting to prove his own theories wrong. We could not accept randomness in the universe - he felt outcomes should be predictable.
  12. I think that was Einstein. I think also that to some people it is true, but if we really seek him, He will turn on the light and show us his hand.
  13. As far as Trivia goes, I do not know where this quote is from, but as per: my thoughts on it, sounds like someone who has done a little thinking about God hasn't bothered to look into the only resource we have for God's thoughts on the subject: The Inspired Bible. For relevance, I can make all sorts of supposition on how and why my car functions, or doesn't, but why wouldn't I just read the owners manual and recommendations?
  14. It was indeed Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, from their brilliant collaboration, "Good Omens". I think it's brilliant. I love Pratchett.
