  1. Step one to being a successful gambler is to hold no value on money. You can't win if you're worrying about what that money can buy, or what it won't buy if you lose it. Phil Ivey once said on Cardplayers Circuit radio show that a true gambler has to be able to pull a hundred dollar bill out of his pocket and light it on fire without a second thought. When it comes to gambling for these guys, those bricks of money aren't really bricks of money. They're just tokens that let you keep playing the game.
  2. i assume it would simply be down to experience, foolishnes, and abundant supply or an addiction. poker is not a game i would gamble on. horse racing however is a different story, though for preference i wouldnt, if gambling was simple and predictable, a bookie would not be a viable proffesion.
  3. It is one of the big three Gambling. (I won't tell you the other two) It always has interested people and will always take their money. Recently, televised games have allowed us to see winners, where earlier we watched the races, etc. for gambling. Men will spend money on this and two other things. It is an addiction, although some young players are very professional and have amassed a great amount of money. There are so many casinos in our area now, all the old=timers take the chartered buses out to these for the daily specials, and spend their days this way. There is a donut shop near me, where several older wealthy landlords gather, and one day one engaged me in conversation, and said this was his life. The shop serves exceptionally good coffee, and he said he spent his time at the coffee shop, waiting for the track and casino to open. He and his friends spend every day there. Interesting, isn't it.
  4. To be a successful poker player you have to have a disregard for cash at all times, plus these pros have been playing high limit poker for years and years. A lot of these players play 1000-2000 no limits all the time, and they can win or lose tons of money every single day. If you are worried about spending to much money playing a game of poker then you should go down to a limt where you are more comfortable, these pros have no issue at all with it.
  5. I can only assume the original poster in not a poker player. While there is always going to be an element of luck involved, most poker pros would tell they are not gambling. They are engaging in a game of skill, where they know what they are doing, they are not just trying to get lucky. With regard to the Poker After Dark format specifically, the bundles of cash on the table are already part of their original buy-in, so they've already invested that money into the game. As stated, the cash is basically chips. If you wanna see wild amounts of cash being thrown around, watch 'High Stakes Poker'.
  6. I would say this really depends on the value of money to the person which is playing poker. What may seem alot of money to you could be pocket change to someone else. As i always say " Only bet what you can afford to lose" Take Care PokerTalk.com
