in texas holdem poker, community cards show a straight. Does high pocket card win?

- no, the best five cards win...if the straight is the best five cards that the players can make, then it's a split pot
- ok it really depends.. lets say the board is 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. if you have 9-10 u cant lose. but lets say the board has 3 of those suits bein hearts and someone has pocket hearts... they have a flush and you lose.
- yeah, sabes beat me to it, i'll try to explain it better to get the points though :P In hold'em you use five cards, any five cards, to make the best hand possible. You have seven cards to choose from, the two in your hand, and the five on the table. If the table shows a royal flush, then everyone wins, split pot. The only way you could win in the aforementioned scenario, is if you had one higher in the straight, for instance 2-6 was showing, and you had the seven, then you would have 3-7, and would win the hand.
- In Texas hold em the ruling is that the best five cards play. So if a straight is shown on the board here is the best advice that one can be given: If you are last to act & everyone else has checked before you roll your hand make a sizeable bet to make your advisary think you have a higher strait or a flush espcialy if 3 cards are suited on the board this will win you hands at least 7 out of 10 times. Also making a big bet in early position here can scare out most seasoned players. If they call they may have the higher straight or have made a flush,oh well you read them wrong learn from it and use it to your advantage, but if they checked they may not have it. The best of it you will split the pot because unless what is your pocket makes that straight better the board plays as the best hand.
