Why do they show poker on ESPN, is it really considered a sport?

- In my opinion, If you can sit down and participate, it's not a sport. (ONLY EXCEPTION...ROWING) If you don't sweat, it's not a sport. If no one wins, it's not a sport Poker, nascar, chess, politics...none of these are sports. But thats only my opinion
- They show it for the ratings, they're very high. When the NHL was locked out they tried it and people loved it, I saw a stat. this year that re-runs of poker were drawing higher ratings than the NHL season this year. so they will stick with it as long as that many people watch.
- Viewers are all over it and it brings in advertising dollars.
- It has an element of sport in it; competition, outwitting your opponent. For the veiwer it has suspense. I'd say it's kind of a mental/psychological sport.

ESPN needs "filler" material during the slow sports season which of course we are in right now, no football, no basketball, no hockey so we are left with baseball, soccer and other inane sports such as: Paint ball tournaments??? what is this considered?? Pool tournaments Bowling Spelling Bees???? The greatest sport of all!!!!! Old films of boxing (modern boxing just doesn't draw the crowds) Fishing (fishing? my god lets watch paint dry) Of course there are the good old standbys: Worlds Strongest Man Reruns Battle of the Network Stars NFL vs AFL at various trifling events Celebrity golf??? lets watch Charles Barkley swing funny!!! ESPN is becoming very much like MTV, I remember when they used to have music on MTV at some point in time we will be saying the good old days were when they had sports on ESPN..
- a sport by definition is a physical activity- so no, i don't think so.
- If these hillbillies where I live can call hunting a sport... then I guess poker is a sport too... At least in poker both sides know they are playing a game!
- Entertainment and Sports Program Network and they paid big money to show this for the next 4 years
- I personally like the poker tournaments on ESPN and think they should keep them. Yes I think it is a sport
