- Texas Hold Em is a 7 card stud game. 7 cards meaning, of course, you get up to 7 cards total (2 to start, 3 more in the second round, one more in the third, and then one final one in the last). Stud means you play with a certain number of cards showing. In the first round, each player is dealt two cards face down. One round of betting commences. In the next round, the dealer places three cards on the table, face up. This round is called the "flop", and the cards are called "community cards" because everyone shares them. So let's say, for instance, there are three players. Player one has a Jd (jack of diamonds) and 10c (10 of clubs) Player two has a 7c and 8c Player 3 has 9h (9 of hearts) and 9s (9 of spades) Player four has Ks Qh The flop comes: 9c Qc Kc At this point, Player one has a straight (9, 10, J, Q, K), Player two has a flush (all clubs), Player 3 has three of a kind, or "trips" (9 9 9) and Player 4 has two pair (Ks Kc and Qh Qc). The next round is called the "turn". If the turn were, say, a 9 of diamonds, Player three would now have a four of a kind. If the turn were a K or a Q, Player four would now have a full house. The final round is called the river. Any remaining players who haven't folded show their cards, and the highest ranking hand wins. The ante is also different. Each turn there is a dealer position. The person to the right of that position places half the ante in the pot. The person to that person's right places the full amount. So say you've decided the ante is $1. The "small blind" (person to dealer's left) places 0.50, the "big blind" (person to that person's left) places $1. Everyone else can fold their hand without putting any money in the middle. The person to the big blind's left goes first. To see the flop they must put the same amount as the big blind. There are two 5 card games that I know of, 5 card stud and 5 card draw. A draw game is when none of the cards are showing. Everyone puts a certain amount in the pot, called an "ante." The dealer simply deals 5 cards to each player. One round of betting takes place, then the remaining players discard the cards they don't want and draw new ones. You can discard all of your cards if you want, just some of them, or none. The dealer deals new cards to each player and one more round of betting takes place. Remaining players show their cards. 5 card stud is similar to Texas Hold em. There are four rounds. In the first, one card is dealt face up, one face down. In each subsequent round, one card is dealt face up until all five cards are dealt or everyone folds. In five card stud, there is often a "bring in" rather than an ante. The player with the lowest card showing must pay the ante. But many people play with the typical ante system, which is everyone putting a certain amount in the pot, and the player with the highest card showing starting. Hope that helped.
