Can a book *really* teach someone how to be better at poker?
I just learned how to play Texas Hold 'Em about 6 months ago, and really enjoy playing. I'm not bad, but I also think that one's success hinges more on blind luck than pure skill. That said, I'd like to get better. My question is two parts : 1.) Can a book REALLY teach someone how to get better at playing poker, and 2.) If so, can someone recommend a book that they believe will help me with that?

- yes i think chris fergison wrote a book about poker he has very good skills just watching helps seeing what you would do and seeing if you choosen the right thing to do
- Well you seem to be on the right track, the fact that you're willing to read books to get better means you're serious about poker. As far as the game being based more on luck, you're right and wrong. On a nightly basis there is more luck involved, but over the year the skill will win out. A book will give you the fundamentals you need to make good decisions as far as odds, situations, and how to calculate outs. The book won't teach you how to read people, or when to make fancy plays, that comes with experience and intuition. You need the books to get your fundamentals down or you won't ever have a chance against good players. Keep in mind some of these things the books teach are based on limit hold em, so if you're playing no limit make sure to avoid those moves. A good book to start with is Super sytems II by Doyle Brunson, also all the Harrington on Hold em books are great for tournaments.
- nope... a book is a book is a book.
- Knowledge is power.
- It can help. You still need the experience to incorporate what you read in the books, but they can certainly teach you to think about certain situations in different ways. I read Harrington on Hold em 1 & 2 (didn't get to 3 yet), and I'd say they've helped.
- A book can teach the basic math involved. It can also give a general strategy on when to raise, call or fold. Poker books will certainly help you improve TO A POINT. You will still have to think quickly at the table, apply the book's teachings, and adapt to the other players. That only comes from experience. Read anything from 2 + 2 publishing. twoplustwo.com I have several of thier books and have learned a little from all of them.
