- Poker is usually played with a standard 52 card deck. The deck contains cards divided into 4 "suits" ("Clubs", "Diamonds", "Hearts", and "Spades".) Each suit contains 13 "ranks" (2-10, "Jack", "Queen", "King", and "Ace".) Regardless of the game, the object of poker is to have a better (higher ranked)"hand" than your opponent(s). A poker hand usually consists of 5 cards. With a standard 52 card deck there are over 2.5 million possible 5 card hands. A poker hand's ranking is based purely on mathematical odds of being dealt that hand out of the 2.5 million+ hands. The following is a list of poker hand categories from highest (best) rank to lowest: (1) Royal Flush (2) Straight Flush (3) Four-Of-A-Kind (4) Full House (5) Flush (6) Straight (7) Three-Of-A-Kind (8) Two Pair (9) A Pair (10) High Card Basically you are trying to take your 5-card hand and determine into which of the above categories it fits. To win a poker hand, your 5-card hand must either be in an higher category than your opponent's 5-card hand or, if you and your opponent's hands are in the same category, your cards must be higher in the category than your opponents (if possible.) In the following paragraphs A=Ace,K=King,Q=Queen,J=Jack and T=Ten. A Royal Flush is basically the highest Straight Flush. It consists of the A-K-Q-J-T all of the same suit. There are only 4 possible Royal Flushes out of the 2.5 million+ possible hands. A Straight Flush is 5 cards in consecutive order all of the same suit. For example: 5,6,7,8 and 9 of hearts or 7,8,9,T, and J of spades. Note: a Royal Flush is basically the highest Straight Flush. Possible straight flushes are as follows (again all the cards must be of the same suit): AKQJT KQJT9 QJT98 JT987 T9876 98765 87654 76543 65432 5432A (Note: The A can be used as a high card or low card in this case it is used as a '1') Out of the 2.5 million+ poker hands there are only 40 straight flushes possible. Four-Of-A-Kind is 4 cards of the same rank and another card. For example: 9999-2 or AAAA-K or 3333-6. A Full House consists of 3 cards of the same rank and 2 card of another rank. For example AAA-KK or 999-66 or 222-JJ. A Flush consists of 5 cards all of the same suit. For example: 2,6,9,T, and J of hearts. A Straight consists of 5 cards in consecutive order. For example: 5,6,7,8 and 9 or A,2,3,4,5 (the A is being used as a '1' again here)or A,K,Q,J,T Three-Of-A-Kind is 3 cards of the same rank and 2 other (non-paired) cards. For example: 999-82 or AAA-JT or 333-Q2. Two Pair consists of a pair of cards of the same rank and another pair of cards of different rank and another card. For example: 88-99-J or TT-AA-3 or 55-22-A A Pair consists of a pair of cards of the same rank and 3 other cards. For example: AA-68T or 22-78J or High Card is basically all poker hands which do not meet the above definitions. For example: A7649 or K3567 or 379JQ. If you would like to know how to play a particular game of poker, you can do a search on the internet for that game or join one of the online poker sites and play/learn for free.
