How to Play Poker Videos

I play Texas Holdem NL Tournaments and generally finish in the top 70-120 (3000 PLAYERS) How do i improve ?

In poker terms I'm known as a rock player who mainly plays when they have a good hand and very calculated risks. How do i improve my game to the next level.

  1. Finish higher than 70-120.
  2. look in the mirror and practice bluffs. also consider other tatics, like raising even tho u have a weak hand
  3. Pick up Dan Harrington's "Harrington on Hold 'Em" Volumes 1-3. Your problem may be that you are not getting aggressive enough when the blinds start going up late in the tourney. Harrington explains that you have to widen the list of hands you play when the blinds start getting bigger. He suggests widening your hand selection when the size of the big blind is 10% of your original stack. For instance, if you started with $1500 in chips, you start loosening up when the big blind reaches $150. You also have to pay close attention to the ratio of the size of your stack as compared to the size of the blinds and antes. Harrington calls this your "M Factor." He divides M Factors into Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red zones. You are in the Green zone when your stack is 20+ times the size of the small blind + the big blind + the ante. You are in the Red zone when your stack is 5 (or less) times the size of the small blind + the big blind + the ante. When you are in the Green zone you are able to play somewhat conservatively and take your time. But as you drift lower thru the zones you have to start taking chances on more starting hands outside of what you call your "good hand" selection. This does not mean you play like a maniac however. It just means that KQs or JTs may be a hand you would like to make a stand with. As you are descending thru the zones, you also have to be somewhat more agressive with these looser starting hands. If you are the first to enter the pot, you should never limp if you decide to play a hand. You should always open up for a raise. When you get into the Red zone your preflop play is reduced to an "all-in or fold" stratgey. Harrington also suggests a great strategy to use when the blinds are big. If you are in late position (on the button or 1 off the button) and no one has entered the pot you should begin raising with any reasonable hand (a standard 3-4xBB raise) to steal the blinds. Taking chances on stealing them helps you make it further in the tournament. These are just a few of Harrington's suggestion (the most important ones in my opinion.)
  4. As always, play tighter and more aggressively. As you're playing online, bluff less. Despite what you've heard, there's no such thing as an online tell. There's more, but I don't want to recreate my book here...
  5. Sounds like you have got some good strategy already. Pick up a few books and read them, then adapt one or two concepts at a time into your play. Reading Lee Jones' Winning Low Limit Holdem, and Ed Miller's Getting Started in Holdem when I first started helped my game immensely, both with live and internet poker. Any of the books listed here http://www.twoplustwo.com/books.html will definitely steer you in the right direction.
